Traditional crafts
The craft is a handmade production, based on the use of hand tools, personal skill of worker, which allows to produce products of high quality, often highly artistic .
The craft came with the start of industrial activity. It had a long historical path of development, taking different forms: homemade craft, handicraft to order, craft for the market. The appearance and development of cities as centers of commerce is connected with the emergence of handicraft to order, craft for the market. The homemade craft is often called the domestic industry (the production of non-agricultural products), the craft made for the market is an artisanal production.
Such crafts as blacksmithing, pottery, carpentry, tailoring, weaving, spinning, basket weaving, furrier, baking, shoemaking, making stoves, tannery, jewelry making and others have been known for centuries. The most widespread crafts in Belarus were weaving, tailoring, pottery, barrel making, blacksmithing and shoemaking.
The weaving was used in the manufacture of linen and hemp canvas for underwear, outerwear as well as belts and braid.
A cooper is a craftsman who makes barrels and other containers from wood. He uses an ax and other carpentry tools to make the parts. Then he connects these parts and the bottom with wooden or iron hoops.
The pottery is a craft which serves for the manufacture of receptacles for cooking food or for the storage of liquid and bulk materials.Nowadays the moldingis made on a potter's wheel. Then they apply the glaze and burn the clay in order to convert it to ceramic.
A blacksmith is a master who is engaged in metal processing. Blacksmiths produce a lot of things required for human existence: tools, weapons, horseshoes, building elements, decorations, etc. This craft is one of the oldest. Blacksmith had to concentrate fully on his employment that requires a complex process. He seemed mysterious to other peasants it . In addition, due to the risk of fire, blacksmiths usually settled in the suburbs. This fact generated an additional mystery. Therefore, blacksmiths were often regarded as shamans, and later wizards associated with the devil.
The shoemaking is a traditional craft dating back to ancient times. It is an art of making shoes of different applications and types. Shoemakers use pads made of wood or metal.
